Maliki Warns of Attempts to Divide Iraq, Calls on Youth to Defend National Unity

Former Iraqi Prime Minister and leader of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, issued a strong warning on Saturday against alleged plans to divide Iraq, calling such efforts a long-standing conspiracy.

Speaking at a large gathering in Baghdad honoring the families of fallen security forces members, Maliki emphasized the critical role of Iraq’s youth in safeguarding the country’s political system and democratic experiment.

"The notion of dividing Iraq is a conspiracy and a 'Zionist' project—referring to the State of Israel—that dates back to the 1980s," Maliki stated. "We must protect the unity of our country from these destructive schemes."

Maliki’s remarks come amid ongoing political challenges in Iraq, including disputes over government formation, tensions between different factions, and external pressures on Iraq’s sovereignty. His comments align with long-standing concerns among Iraqi political figures about foreign influence and the potential fragmentation of the country along sectarian or ethnic lines.

During the event, which was attended by over 1,000 young Iraqis from the families of fallen security personnel, Maliki reaffirmed the importance of national unity. "Thanks to the awareness of our youth, we will protect Iraq, the political process, and thwart any conspiracy aimed at creating chaos or terrorism," he said.

Iraq has long struggled to maintain true sovereignty, with deep political and military ties to Iran often shaping its internal and foreign policies. The country remains plagued by sectarian divisions, ongoing internal conflicts, and a government that has failed to equitably distribute power and resources among its diverse ethnic and religious groups. The lack of justice in addressing the rights of minorities, particularly the Kurds, has only deepened Iraq’s vulnerabilities, making it a perpetual subject of division and foreign manipulation.

As Iraq attempts to recover from years of instability and navigate its fragile political landscape, Maliki’s statements highlight the reality that national cohesion remains elusive. The country’s entrenched sectarian rivalries, external influences, and failure to ensure equal rights for all communities continue to fuel the very divisions that make Iraq susceptible to internal strife and external agendas.
