Iraq Faces Growing Water Crisis: UN Urges Immediate Action on World Water Day

Climate change is taking a devastating toll on Iraq's water resources, leading to shrinking rivers and escalating demand for water across the country. As millions of Iraqis already grapple with the consequences of water scarcity, the urgency of addressing this critical issue has never been clearer.

On this World Water Day (March 22, 2025), Ghulam M. Isaczai, the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Resident Coordinator for Iraq, issued a powerful statement calling for immediate action to protect and manage Iraq’s dwindling water supply. "Iraq’s water resources are severely impacted by climate change," Isaczai stated. "As rivers shrink and the demand for water increases, millions already feel the strain. We must act now to protect and manage this vital resource so that every Iraqi has access to water—and with it, a more secure future."

The United Nations, in partnership with the Government of Iraq and various organizations, is working tirelessly to address this pressing challenge. Efforts include repairing and upgrading water systems, improving irrigation practices, enhancing water quality, and promoting conservation measures. These initiatives aim not only to address immediate water shortages but to build a more sustainable and resilient water management system for Iraq's future.

"On this World Water Day, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting Iraq in achieving a water-secure future for all," Isaczai emphasized, stressing the UN's ongoing dedication to helping Iraq overcome its water crisis.

As Iraq faces increasingly severe water scarcity, the need for collective action is paramount. The UN's support, alongside the Government of Iraq's efforts, is critical in securing access to safe water for all citizens, ensuring a more secure and sustainable future in the face of climate change.
